Why Community Is Cybersecurity's Biggest Competitive Advantage

Why Community Is Cybersecurity's Biggest Competitive Advantage

Cybersecurity is one of the most technical industries around, yet the companies pulling ahead aren't winning on product alone. They're winning on trust, and trust is built through community, not another whitepaper or conference booth.

‍

Technical, but Relationship-Driven

Buyers are sophisticated and sales cycles are long, but specs rarely close deals. What moves a CISO from "interesting pitch" to "trusted vendor" is usually relational: a peer's recommendation, a conversation at an event, someone whose judgment they already trust. Security decisions carry real risk, and people want to make risky decisions alongside someone they trust.

That's why community-led GTM is outperforming pure product marketing. Slack groups, meetups, and niche events build durable inbound demand that paid demand-gen can't replicate. As Mariana Padilla (Harmonic Security) puts it: "The best way to build trust is through community and human relationships." She treats it like farming: "You plant your seeds, water them, and at some point you cash it in." The mistake is networking only when you need something.

Raj Rajamani (Jetstream Security) sees the same effect on hiring: "Talent attracts talent... it becomes a group that attracts more talent." Community is a recruiting flywheel, not just a marketing channel.

‍

Product Marketing Alone Doesn't Win

Mariana is blunt: "Building an entire marketing strategy around product marketing is a losing proposition." Buyers want to know why a product matters, and that's delivered through story and trust, not spec sheets. Brand distinctiveness matters too, cybersecurity's sea of navy quarter-zips is, in her words, "a massive opportunity for disruption."

Gal Shafir (Fig Security) agrees the moat has shifted: with AI closing technical gaps fast, what differentiates companies now is "intimate relationships with customers," strong GTM, and brand.

‍

Personal Brand Is Also a Hiring Tool

Presence, talks, content, visible community engagement, increasingly beats cold applications. Mariana got her role at Harmonic through relationships built years earlier: being top-of-mind wins both deals and hires. She distinguishes real community from vanity metrics: "I want to know who's following me... not just having 10,000 followers." Her personal brand was "our biggest source of inbound at Hackerverse."

Standing out isn't always comfortable. Overmind's co-founders noted the cultural pull toward staying in a quiet building out of the UK versus the Bay Area, "you never want to be the tallest piece of grass." But visibility compounds.

‍

Hiring as Its Own GTM Motion

Mike McKenna (Manifold Security) argues winning talent deserves the same rigor as winning customers: a clear employee value proposition, and hiring for learning speed and ownership over resume keywords.

‍

Bottom Line

  • Community and brand are direct levers on revenue and recruiting, not soft investments.
  • Companies building authentic community and visible people outcompete those relying on product marketing and cold outbound alone.
  • Early GTM/community hires matter disproportionately: they build relationship infrastructure that generates warm deal flow and warm candidates for years.
