How Senior Should Your First Sales Hire Be?

How Senior Should Your First Sales Hire Be?

For most early-stage cybersecurity startups, an experienced Account Executive (AE) is the best first sales hire. They can close enterprise deals, build a pipeline and help establish a repeatable sales process before the business invests in a VP of Sales or a larger team.

‍

How senior should your first sales hire be?

It's a question we hear regularly from cybersecurity founders after a funding round: should the first sales hire be a junior AE, an experienced seller or a VP of Sales?

Our view? Somewhere in the middle.

An experienced AE is usually the best fit for a Seed to Series B cybersecurity startup. They have the experience to bring in revenue now, but they're still happy being hands-on and building the sales process from scratch.

Your first sales hire isn't just responsible for hitting targets. They're helping create the foundations for your future sales team.

‍

Why not hire a junior AE first?

A junior AE might be more affordable and keen to prove themselves, but there's one important question: who is going to show them what works?

Early-stage startups rarely have an established sales playbook. Without clear processes, proven messaging or someone with time to coach them, a junior rep can struggle to build momentum.

If founders are already juggling product development, fundraising and customer conversations, managing a junior salesperson can quickly become another full-time responsibility.

‍

Why not hire a VP of Sales?

A VP of Sales brings leadership experience, but do you actually need someone to manage a team that doesn't exist yet?

At an early stage, you need someone who can prospect, build relationships and close deals themselves. Hiring a VP too early can mean paying for senior leadership when the immediate priority is generating revenue.

A VP of Sales becomes a stronger hire once you have a repeatable sales process, understand your ideal customer and are ready to scale the team.

‍

What should your first sales hire look like?

Look for an experienced AE with a background in enterprise cybersecurity sales.

Ideally, they should be able to:

  • Build their own pipeline and generate opportunities.
  • Sell complex security solutions to senior decision-makers, including CISOs.
  • Manage longer enterprise sales cycles.
  • Work closely with founders on early customer conversations.
  • Document what's working and help build a repeatable sales playbook.

You want someone who can close deals today and help shape the sales team you'll need tomorrow.

‍

What are the biggest mistakes when hiring your first salesperson?

The biggest mistake is hiring for the company you hope to become, rather than the one you are today.

A VP of Sales who hasn't sourced a deal in years might not be right for a business that needs immediate pipeline. Equally, a junior AE might struggle without an established sales process.

Another common mistake is stepping back too early. Founders should stay involved in customer conversations while their first salesperson gets up to speed. In cybersecurity, buyers often want to hear directly from the people behind the product.

One question worth asking candidates is: "How would you spend your first 90 days?"

Look for answers focused on customers, pipeline and understanding the product, rather than immediately talking about building a team.

FAQs

Who should a startup hire as its first salesperson?

Most early-stage startups should consider an experienced Account Executive who can generate pipeline, close deals and build the foundations of a sales process.

When should a cybersecurity startup hire a VP of Sales?

When it has a repeatable sales motion, a clear ideal customer profile and plans to recruit and manage multiple salespeople.

Should a startup hire an SDR or AE first?

An AE is generally the stronger first hire if the immediate priority is closing revenue. SDRs become more valuable once there's a sales process and enough capacity to convert the opportunities they generate.

What should a first sales hire achieve in 12 months?

New customers, a healthy pipeline, a better understanding of the sales process and a playbook that future sales hires can follow.
